Best Hotels in Cancun: All-Inclusive vs Non All-Inclusive Accommodation

If this is your first time in Cancun, here is a great place to start to familiarize yourself with the all-inclusive resort concept and figure out if it’s the right choice for you.

🏨 What Does All Inclusive Mean in Cancun?

All-inclusive in Cancun generally means that the room, meals, drinks, and access to resort facilities are included in the price of the stay. However, the exact inclusions may vary by hotel.

Some all-inclusive resorts also include Cancun tours and activities as part of the hotel price.

For example, if you stay at one of the Xcaret Hotels (Hotel Xcaret Arte, Hotel Xcaret Mexico, and Casa de la Playa), you can enjoy free access to various attractions including Xcaret parks and and tours.

💡Choosing an all-inclusive resort in Cancun is a great option if you’re looking for a hassle-free vacation.

This means that you get to experience all that Cancun has to offer without the stress of planning and paying for extra activities.

🏨 All-Inclusive vs Not All-Inclusive Hotels: What’s the Difference?

All-inclusive resorts basically cover not just the room but also all three meals and snacks. Non All-inclusive hotels offer a European plan only, which covers just the room or room with breakfast.

Some resorts are all-inclusive optional, which means you can book with either the all-inclusive price and enjoy all the meals and extra amenities or the non all-inclusive price and have just the room.

Here is an example of the same room with the different packages highlighted in yellow. The not all-inclusive option costs $200, while the all-inclusive option costs $267.

where to stay in Cancun: non all inclusive vs all inclusive hotels

🏨 Is it better to stay at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun or not?

It is better to stay at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun than not if you’re looking for a cost-effective and hassle-free experience. Especially if you like trying different types of food and drinks or spending time at a clean beach, it would be cheaper for you to stay at all-inclusive resorts than regular hotels and incurring all the costs for food, beverages, and transportation.

The deluxe rooms are small but new and clean, although those with a king bed may feel even smaller compared to the ones with a queen bed. Guests can enjoy dinner at Fusion Beach Bar and watch a fire show by the beach, just a short walk away.

However, there are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. Most of the deluxe rooms do not have a safe, so you will need to take extra precautions with your belongings.

Where to Stay in and around Cancun & Riviera Maya, Mexico

When planning a vacation to Cancun, it’s important to choose the right area to stay in. Cancun Hotel Zone is the safest area to stay as all the resorts are located on the beach with gated entries and securities on patrol 24/7.

There are areas outside of the resorts that can be unsafe, so it’s best to take precautions when walking around at night. For example, areas like Parque las Palapas and El Centro (Downtown Cancun) are safe to walk around during the day, but I would recommend taking a taxi if you’re heading out at night.

Safe Areas to Walk Around at Night in Cancun: La Isla Shopping Village & Hotel Zone Nightlife Hub surrounding Coco Bongo

Overall, Cancun is a safe city and with a little common sense and safety precautions, you’ll have no problem enjoying your stay here!

Best Location in Cancún for First Time Visitors: Hotel Zone Strip (Zona Hotelera)

If you’re looking for the best areas in Cancun to stay in during your first visit, look no further than the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) where the majority of accommodations are.

The Cancun Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera in Spanish) is a 22-km long strip of high-rise hotels, resorts, bars, and restaurants. This area can be roughly divided into three different regions:

  • North Hotel Zone (up to Boulevard Kukulkan KM 8) where the beaches are quieter
  • Middle Hotel Zone (roughly from Boulevard Kukulkan KM 8.5 to KM 14.5) which offers great shopping and nightlife options including Cancun’s best bars, clubs, and excellent dining spots
  • South Hotel Zone has more peaceful surroundings which is ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway without sacrificing comfort or safety.
Top 10 All-inclusive resorts in Cancun Mexico and top cancun resorts near Cancun Mexico

Any place in the Hotel Zone can make a great home base for first-timers to Cancún, as most resorts here are like their own mini-cities with dining, nightclubs, private beaches, outdoor pools, and even water parks – you likely won’t even feel the need to leave the resorts.

Nevertheless, my favorite part of Cancun Zona Hotelera was the Middle Hotel Zone – the center of all the action. You will easily find Cancún’s best restaurants, nightlife, attractions, activities, and shopping options here.

Within Cancun Middle Hotel Zone, my top pick is Km12 near the Interactive Aquarium and La Isla Cancun Shopping Village. La Isla is a bustling open-air mall that boasts an array of retailers as well as several award-winning waterfront restaurants, so you can shop, dine, and enjoy spectacular views all in one convenient location. And if you’re looking for some exciting water activities and water sports, La Isla has you covered. You can go jet skiing or try your hand at flying a jetpack, or step things up a notch with a thrilling hoverboard flight.

Best Neighborhoods for Sightseeing: Middle Hotel Zone, El Centro, Playa del Carmen

If you want to take day trips to explore Chichén Itzá or Tulum, most tour operators offer free pickup from anywhere in Hotel Zone, so it won’t matter where you stay very much within the area. However, if you’re looking for some local sightseeing, staying in the Middle Hotel Zone is a great option. There, you will be close to La Isla Shopping Mall, the aquarium, and plenty of opportunities for snorkeling, scuba diving, and water sports activities.

El Centro, or Downtown Cancún, offers budget accommodation in residential areas with a local vibe, hole-in-the-wall taco shops, local bars, and the large Mercado 28 outdoor market.

Playa del Carmen is a charming coastal resort town in Riviera Maya that’s just about one hour drive from Cancun. It’s known for its vibrant Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) and some of the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. With its close proximity to ancient ruins like Tulum and the ferry to Cozumel, Playa del Carmen is the perfect gateway to your dream vacation.

Xplor vs Xplor Fuego

While you’re in Playa del Carmen, don’t miss out on the eco-tourism theme parks of Xcaret. Some of my favorite parks are Xplor (for ATV adventures and stalactite river underground expedition), Xcaret (cultural activities and amazing night show), and Xel Ha (eco water parks with zip-lines and hammock splash).

If you stay at the following Xcaret hotels, you will get free access to Xcaret attractions, activities, tours, and parks as part of the all-inclusive package.

Best Areas in Cancún for Partying and Nightlife: Hotel Zone (KM 9) & Temptation Cancun Resort

Partying and nightlife can be found in several areas in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, but the best areas for night owls and party lovers are in the Middle Hotel Zone (especially in KM 9 – Punta Cancun) and Temptation Cancun Resort.

Punta Cancun is home to lively bars and nightclubs, including popular chains like Coco Bongo, Señor Frog’s, Mandala, and La Vaquita. You will find multi-level mega-parties with live music, DJs, acrobats, gogo dancers, showgirls, and more. The clubs here are some of the best in all of Mexico, and you can find something to suit your taste no matter what kind of music you like. Just be prepared to pay a cover charge and drink prices may set you back a little.

Best Areas in Cancún and Riviera Maya for Families: Hotel Zone & Playa del Carmen

If you’re looking for a family-friendly destination with plenty to keep the kids entertained, the North and South Hotel Zones are the best areas for families, with plenty of resorts that have kids’ clubs and excellent pools. The waves are gentle and swimming is easy. The Middle Hotel Zone is great for older kids and teens, as it’s close to local attractions and activities.

So, when it comes down to the decision of where to stay in Cancun, would a non all-inclusive hotel or an all-inclusive resort be best for you?

If you are looking for a carefree vacation experience with minimal effort, then an all-inclusive resort is the right choice. However, if you want more freedom to come and go as you please and explore Cancun on your own time, then a non-all inclusive hotel would be better suited for your needs.

No matter which option you choose, Cancun will provide you with an amazing vacation experience!

  1. Great info on the pros and cons of top 10 hotels in Cancun. I think Marriott is too expensive for a non all inclusive hotel in Cancun though. I would rather stay at an all-inclusive resort for that price
