How to Get from Cancun to Puerto Morelos

Traveling from Cancun to Puerto Morelos is a breeze with various options, including private transfer, shared shuttle, car rental, taxi, and more!

1. Private Transfer – Best Way to Get from Cancun Airport to Puerto Morelos

From my own personal experience making multiple trips to Cancun and the surrounding areas over the past few years, I’d say that a private transfer is the ultimate best way to start your vacation off right!

The best thing about the private transfer is that there is no waiting around at the airport! Private transfers can be easily scheduled online in advance. You’ll know the price and commitment beforehand, so you can rest assured there won’t be any crazy surprises. Then, when you arrive and clear customs, your driver will be waiting outside with a warm welcome, ready to take you to your destination.

With a private transfer, it should take you only 20 to 30 minutes from the airport to your hotel in the heart of Puerto Morelos. The main reason why I think private transfer service is the best way to get from Cancun to Puerto Morelos is that you won’t have to worry as much.

Your driver will be waiting for you at the airport and will be available throughout your journey in case there is any delay or issues with your luggage. Moreover, the prices are competitive and you’ll be able to travel in comfort, knowing your driver is always there for you.

2. Shared Shuttle from Cancun to Puerto Morelos

If you’re a solo traveler to Puerto Morelos, the shared shuttle is an economical alternative. For those traveling as a party of two or more from Cancun to Puerto Morelos, the private transfer option offers much better savings and convenience compared to the shared shuttle.

Taking a shared shuttle means that you will say goodbye to time and convenience in exchange for money! Not only will it make stops at multiple Cancun International Airport terminals, but the shared shuttle will also make several stops along the way to pick up and drop off passengers before reaching your destination in Puerto Morelos.

While it only takes around half an hour to get from Cancun to Puerto Morelos in a private transfer, it can take up to an hour with a shared shuttle. Keep in mind that although half an hour extra doesn’t sound too bad when you sip a cup of coffee at your desk planning the trip, it may feel like an eternity when you’re on the road after a long flight.

3. Renting a Car from Cancun to Puerto Morelos

If you want to venture off the beaten path to see lesser-known cenotes, ancient sites, and Mayan Ruins, renting a car is one of the best ways to get to Puerto Morelos and explore the surrounding areas in Riviera Maya.

With a rental car, you will have the freedom to explore the beautiful landscapes of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and surrounding areas in Riviera Maya at your own pace! The well-maintained roads and clear signages will enable you to navigate the region with ease, so it’s a great idea to take in all that the area has to offer in convenience and comfort by renting your own vehicle.

renting a car in Mexico

However, if you do decide to rent a car, one thing you have to watch out for is the Mexican car rental scam. I learned it the hard way on my first trip to Cancun, so I want to make sure you don’t fall for the same trap.

When I booked a car rental in Cancun through Expedia, I was expecting to pay only $30 for two days (including taxes and fees). As my credit card offers complimentary auto rental insurance, I usually don’t need to pay extra for coverage.

However, upon arriving at the car rental place, the staff said I had to purchase their insurance – an additional $150/day. I pointed out my credit card policy that included auto rental insurance but they argued that I would still need Mexican car insurance. After two hours of debating, they wouldn’t budge and asked me to put down a $20,000 deposit or buy the expensive insurance. I didn’t want to waste time and ended up paying an extra $340 for the two days.

Long story short, even if you have Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage from U.S credit card companies (such as Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express, etc), you will still be required to purchase Mexican car insurance. Discover Cars charges as low as $7 per day for Mexican insurance full coverage and will help you avoid being scammed at car rental places.

After being scammed horribly that time, I have used Discover Cars on other trips and I highly recommend it for the great deals and cheap reliable insurance ✔️BOOK NOW

Discover Cars has the best selection of car rental companies at the airport – and you won’t believe how affordable it is! Both car rental rates and full coverage insurances are cheap so you know you will get a good deal.

4. Taking Airport Taxi

As you step out of the arrivals area at Cancun airport, there are several taxi booths beckoning you with their offers. Needless to say, they come with an exorbitant price tag. You may think you can bargain for the best price, but it’s virtually impossible – even if you manage to get prices down to 70-80% of the original offer, that’s still too much – yes, that’s how overpriced it is!

One time I flew into Cancun International Airport without planning. I managed to bargain for a ride from $100 USD to $35 USD because it was such a late flight and no one was around. It sounded like a good deal, but I could have booked a private transfer for only $25.

A private transfer from Cancun Airport to Puerto Morelos would have been much cheaper and more reliable. As an added bonus, your driver will speak English so you can easily communicate.

5. Free Airport Transportation with Timeshare Presentation

Be warned – you could be cornered by a group of people who appear highly educated and presentable, speaking fluently in English, offering a free ride to your resort in exchange for ninety minutes of your time. Do not give in! Shake off the temptation, and make a swift exit if you don’t want to waste the precious time of your vacation.

These people are representatives from Mexican resorts trying to woo you into a timeshare presentation, which has earned a shady reputation as one of the biggest scams in the area! I have experienced these first-hand and can tell you, they are not for the faint of heart.

Timeshare presentations are an endless parade of relentless high-pressure sales pitches that can drag on for 6 or 7 hours. If you still want to try attending one to save money, make sure to grab my timeshare presentation survival guide!

Uber has become the preferred method of transportation for many travelers, so you probably wonder why I didn’t cover Uber as an option to travel from Cancun to Puerto Morelos. So, is there Uber in Cancun or Puerto Morelos?

The answer is no. Uber has been on and off for a while in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, but its service has been terminated. However, with at least six different alternatives covered in this post, you should have no problem planning your travel from Cancun to Puerto Morelos.
