Best Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tours

If you’re looking to get the most out of your snorkeling experience in Isla Mujeres, it’s best to take a tour. While there are some spots you can snorkel on your own, the best spots require a boat ride. Tours from Cancun will take you to the best spots and provide all the equipment you need. And, since you’ll be avoiding the ferry, it’s a more cost-effective option.

1. Snorkeling with Whale Sharks

Snorkeling with whale sharks is a unique experience that is only available from May through mid-September! With an expert guide, you will be able to swim with the world’s largest fish while looking out for dolphins, manta rays, and turtles. This is an immersive experience that you don’t want to miss if you’re visiting during the season!

2. Reef & Shipwreck Snorkeling

Exploring a shipwreck is something everybody wants to try, but it is usually only available to scuba divers because of the depth of the sunken ship. However, in Isla Mujeres, you can snorkeling around a shipwreck!

With different passageways and an interesting variety of underwater fish wandering around this place, you will spend a fun time exploring the ship. If you like adventure and something cool, this is definitely worth the try.

3. El Meco Reef Snorkeling With Catamaran Sail & Spinnaker Activity

El Meco Reef is a popular snorkeling destination located in the turquoise waters between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. The reef features shallow waters and an abundance of marine life, making it a perfect spot for both experienced and beginner snorkelers.

There are many tour operators that can take you from Cancun to Isla Mujeres on a day trip that includes an open bar and snorkeling at El Meco Reef. I have taken two of these all-inclusive tours, one from Diamond Bright and the other one from Albatros. I think they both offer great value for money, but I prefer the Platinum Package from Albatros.

Even though it is a bit more expensive, the Albatros Platinum Isla Mujeres Catamaran Tour has more alcohol and cocktail options for the open bar. The VIP beach club is much less crowded, with more cabanas and hammock swings to relax. For lunch, you can order food from the à la carte menu with no extra cost instead of having a box lunch or a buffet like other catamaran tour packages. You can order as many à la carte dishes as you want so it’s technically like a buffet, but the food was so much fresher and better!

Top Things to do in Cancun - Spinnaker Activity

Another thing I really loved about this Isla Mujeres snorkeling and sailing experience is because of the spinnaker activity on the way back from the island. If you haven’t tried the spinnaker activity before, you definitely should!

It is a unique and thrilling experience where you jump into the ocean without a life jacket and swim over to the swing attached to a parachute. Once you’re there, try sitting on the swing and holding tight! When the wind picks up, you’ll start to ascend into the air, right in front of the catamaran.

4. MUSA – Cancun Underwater Museum

The MUSA, also known as Museo Subacuático de Arte or Underwater Museum of Art, is the world’s largest underwater museum, located off the southern coast of Isla Mujeres. This submerged museum with over 500 life-size sculptures served as an artificial reef to preserve marine life.

Many visitors choose to explore this underwater wonder through scuba diving since it doesn’t require any prior experience with the Discover Scuba Diving program, but you could also enjoy the sights at some shallow ends with snorkeling!

Other Top-Rated Snorkeling Spots in Isla Mujeres

5. Playa Norte

Playa Norte is a great spot to go snorkeling on your own without taking a boat. The beach has amazing crystal clear water and no currents, making it a perfectly safe place to explore. Although the abundance of marine life can’t be compared to a snorkel trip taken by boat, you’ll still see a lot of fish and other sea creatures swimming around.

6. Garrafon de Castilla

This beach club that belongs to Hotel Garrafon de Castilla is another excellent spot for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres without taking a boat tour. The entry fee is only 100 pesos per person ($5 USD), making it an affordable option for travelers on a budget.

There are plenty of options for food and drink at the hotel, so you can refuel after a long day of exploring the underwater world. The staff at Garrafon de Castilla are incredibly friendly and helpful, so don’t hesitate to ask for tips on the best places to snorkel. The beach is a bit rocky, so it’s best that you wear water shoes to protect your feet.

7. El Farito (Lighthouse Reef)

El Farito is a popular snorkeling spot in Isla Mujeres just 5 minutes offshore by boat. The highlight of this spot is the small abandoned lighthouse. Because the waters are relatively shallow, the sunlight could reach the bottom and reflect more colors. It’s also a great place for beginners and kids to practice snorkeling.

8. Manchones Reef

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or just getting started, you will find Manchones Reef an excellent snorkeling spot in Isla Mujeres thanks to its clear visibility and a wide variety of marine life. Part of the Manchones Reef overlaps with the Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA), so you will have the opportunity to see a couple of sculptures and reefs that belong to the museum. Because of its shallow water and calm currents, Manchones Reef is specifically ideal for families with kids or beginner snorkelers.

9. Garrafon Natural Reef Park

Garrafon Natural Reef Park sits on the southern end of Isla Mujeres and is home to some of the most stunning coral and marine life in the area. With a maximum depth of 12 feet (3.6 meters), it’s another perfect place for inexperienced snorkelers

There is an all-inclusive VIP package available for Isla Mujeres Garrafon Natural Reef Park, where you get round trip ferry transportation between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, VIP access to Garrafon Park and Punta Sur including lounge chairs and hammocks, unlimited zip line experience, gourmet buffet lunch, an open bar, and snorkeling gear.
