Once you arrive in Cancun, you may be tempted to spend some time on the stunning white-sand beaches or stay at one of the best all-inclusive resorts in town before heading south to Tulum.

No worries, whether you’re coming from Cancun International Airport (CUN) or the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera), I’ve got you covered with tips for getting around in detail below.

As someone who has made multiple trips to Cancun and Tulum over the past few years, I have tried them all, and I can tell you that the best option to get from Cancun Airport to Tulum is through private transfer.

Private transfers can be scheduled online in advance. That way, you are fully aware of the price and the commitment. It’s a breeze after you clear customs and pick up your luggage, as your driver is already waiting outside for you.

When it comes to traveling from Cancun Airport to Tulum, your best bet is a private transfer. Not only is it the most convenient and comfortable option, but it’s also the safest.

Travel is stressful when you’re in the middle of it and something goes wrong. But with a private transfer, you won’t have to worry as much. Your driver will wait for you in case there is any delay or issues with your luggage.

In addition, the private shuttle from Cancun Airport is an insured and clean air-conditioned vehicle. Trust me, the last thing you want on your Tulum vacation is a cramped and uncomfortable two-hour drive after a long flight!

When you exit the airport after Customs clearance and baggage claim, your driver will meet you with a greeting sign. They will walk you and your luggage to the car or SUV and take you directly to your destination.

2. Shared Shuttle – Only Worth it for Solo Travelers

If you’re looking to cut costs on transportation from Cancun to Tulum, you may think of shared shuttle as an option. However, it actually doesn’t save you much money unless you are a solo traveler. For a party of two and more, the private transfer is cheaper and more convenient than the shared shuttle.

With the shared shuttle, you are sacrificing time and convenience. The shuttle van will make stops at all of Cancun International Airport terminals and three other towns in Riviera Maya to pick up customers before reaching Tulum. On top of that, the shared shuttle is more cramped than private transfers or taxis. If you have a lot of luggage, there may not even be enough space.

While it only takes 1.5 hours to get from Cancun to Tulum in a private transfer, it can take 2.5 hours to 3 hours with a shared shuttle.

3. Renting a Car from Cancun Airport to Tulum

If you only plan to visit Cancun and Tulum ruins, renting a car may not be necessary because there are many tours available.

However, if you want to venture off the beaten path to see lesser-known cenotes, ancient sites and Mayan Ruins and make stops at different resort towns on the way from Cancun to southern Riviera Maya, renting a car from Cancun International Airport is one of the best ways to get to Tulum and explore the surrounding areas in Riviera Maya.

With a rental car, you will have the freedom to explore on your own schedule and enjoy the convenience of having your vehicle. Thanks to the excellent roads and signage in Cancun and Tulum, you’ll be able to get around with ease.

Several companies offer car rentals at the airport that you can find on Discover Cars. Since there are more supplies at the airports, the car rental rates tend to be cheaper than if you want to rent a car in the small town of Tulum.

4. ADO Bus from Cancun Airport to Tulum

ADO buses connect all the major towns in the Yucatan Peninsula, including cities and towns in Quintana Roo. The cheapest way to travel from Cancun Airport to Tulum is by taking the ADO bus. The trip will take about 2.5 to 3 hours and will cost 280 MXN pesos (about 14 USD) per person.

There are only two rides per day for the direct bus from Cancun to Tulum. If the departure times do not align with your flight arrival, you may need to take the bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and transfer to a taxi or colectivo (shared van) for the remainder of the journey to Tulum. This route is more frequent, but may require more time and transfers.

You can check the Cancun to Tulum bus schedules and book your tickets online through the ADO website. However, it is important to note that using the bus as a means of transportation can be unreliable, as the length of time you may be held up for customs clearance and baggage claim is unknown. As a result, it may be better to purchase your bus tickets upon arrival rather than in advance.

You have the option of purchasing your ticket at the ADO bus station or booth located in the airport upon your arrival. If there is no agent available at the booth, you can also purchase your ticket on the bus itself. The bus is equipped with air conditioning and there is storage for luggage underneath it.

Although riding the bus is not the preferred method to get from Cancun to Tulum for most visitors, it is relatively safe and can be a good solution for a tight budget.

5. Airport Taxi

Since transportation from Cancun airport is regulated, only authorized companies can have access to and operate at the airport. As you make your way towards the exits, you will see several taxi booths trying to woo you in. They are very overpriced.

Even when you can manage to bargain and bring the price down to 70-80% of what they originally offer, it is still overpriced. Thinking you can bargain more? It’s very difficult because you don’t have leverage at the airport – all of the booths with different names are managed by the same company!

That’s why I would always recommend choosing a private transfer from Cancun to Tulum with a trustworthy company versus a taxi at the airport. The price is more reasonable and you will have an English-speaking driver.

6. Free Transportation Through Timeshare Presentation

Beware that you may be approached by a group of nicely dressed people who speak very good English, offering a transfer to your hotel or resort for free in exchange for 90 minutes of your time. You should just shake your head and make your way to the exit.

They are vendors trying to get you to do a timeshare presentation, which is often considered one of the biggest scams in Cancun. I have done a few of those and I can tell you that timeshare presentations are nightmares – they are very high-pressured sales pitches that can last 6-7 hours if you’re not adamant enough to say no.

7. Getting from Cancun to Tulum On A Day Tour

Since many Cancun Tulum tours offer free pick up and drop off in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, I used to take advantage of that to save time and money.

I booked a tour from a hotel in Cancun and asked to be dropped off at a hotel in Playa del Carmen after the tour ends. That way, I checked out of my hotel in Cancun in the morning and checked in to my new hotel in Playa del Carmen in the afternoon.

Not only was I able to enjoy the whole day of the excursion and save money on transportation, but I also saved on time. And I think we can all agree that time is just as important when we are on vacation, right?

If you don’t want to switch hotels and would just like to set the base of your vacation in Cancun while visiting only the highlights of Tulum, you can also do that with day tours. You’ll be able to explore the ruins of the city, walk along the beautiful beach, and much more.

Contrary to common belief, getting from Cancun Hotel Zone to Tulum is not necessarily cheaper than from the airport to Tulum, because the distance is longer. Cancun Hotel Zone is about 20km north of Cancun Airport.

The easiest and most convenient way to get from Cancun Hotel Zone to Tulum is to rent a car, but you can also book a taxi or join a tour.

8. Car Rental from Cancun Hotel Zone to Tulum

Several companies offer car rentals along Cancun Hotel Zone that you can find on Discover Cars. Most of them would be around La Isla Mall. The rates are quite similar between Cancun Hotel Zone and Cancun International Airport. You can also choose to pick up at Cancun Hotel Zone and drop off at the airport.

If you rent a car and drive between Cancun to Tulum, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. First things first, check with your hotel to make sure they offer free parking. If they don’t, you may want to reconsider renting a car as the cost can add up.

2. Use a credit card to reserve your car rental since the amount is just on hold – a pending transaction that won’t be posted in your account. When you use the debit card, the money is removed from your account and returned when you return the car. With a debit card, you may see a delay in your money returning to the account, and in many cases, foreign transactions fees may apply.

3. The speed limit is kilometers per hour (KM/H), not miles per hour

4. For your safety, stick to the paid highways and main roads.

5. The drive from Cancun to Tulum will be along Highway 307. Watch out for at least 3 police checkpoints on highway 307.

9. Taxi from Cancun Hotel Zone to Tulum

Taking a taxi from Cancun to Tulum can be a costly experience, with prices ranging anywhere from $160 to $200. There are a few things you can do to avoid being overcharged, but it mostly depends on your luck.

First of all, it’s important to be aware that the taxi drivers will judge your appearance and give you a price based on that. If you dress nicely with an all-inclusive band around your wrist, you will most likely get a higher price. If you manage to act like it’s not your first time in Mexico and you seem familiar with the area, you may get a discount.

When you take a taxi from Cancun to Tulum, Mexico, be sure to negotiate and agree on the fare before getting in the car. If you just jump in the car, they can throw out whatever price they want when you arrive in Tulum. Make sure you know, agree to, and are firm on the price before you get in the taxi. Doing so will ensure that you aren’t overcharged for your ride.

You can ask your hotel receptionist or the doorman to call a taxi for you. If you give them a nice tip, they are usually pretty good at negotiating the taxi rates for you as well.

How to Get Around in Tulum Without Uber

Even though there is no Uber in Tulum, you won’t have a shortage of transportation options to get around town. Other than renting a car and hopping on a taxi, you can join a guided ATV tour, moped tour, or scooter tour.
