However, despite all the hype, I was underwhelmed by my experience at Sushi Ota. In this post, I’ll provide you with everything you need to know about the restaurant, including Sushi Ota menu, omakase, reservation system, and photos.

My review is completely honest and I will share with you why I think you should spend your money elsewhere.

Sushi Ota Menu

Among the menu items for appetizers are the Green Salad, Seaweed Salad, Calamari Salad, Mushroom Salad, and Sashimi Salad.

For the entrees from the kitchen, Sushi Ota offers different options with fried or steamed rice, such as Beef Teriyaki, Chicken Teriyaki, Tempura, Vegetable Tempura, Miso Marinated Seabass, and Salmon Teriyaki.

The OTA “B” is a comprehensive meal that offers sashimi tuna, yellowtail, white meat fish, surf clam, broiled salmon, scallop dynamite, shrimp tempura, seaweed salad, spinach, soup, and rice steamed or fried.

Unlike most authentic Japanese restaurants in San Diego, Sushi Ota doesn’t include a complimentary miso soup with their sashimi and sushi combos.

From the sushi bar, there are different sushi combos and rolls available. The Sushi Combo is a mix of Tuna, yellowtail, octopus, shrimp, salmon, eel, white meat fish, and a California roll with imitation crab.

The Osusume Sushi is a chef’s choice platter of squid, tuna belly, red snapper, yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, salmon, surf clam, salmon roe, sea urchin, eel, negitoro, and umeshisoyamaimo.

The Chirashi is a large portion of sushi rice in a bowl covered with different kinds of raw fish such as tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, octopus, surf clam, white meat fish, and eel.

The Deluxe Chirashi offers toro, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, octopus, sea urchin, white meat fish, surf clam, and eel.

The Tekka Don is a thin-sliced raw tuna over a large portion of sushi rice in a bowl, while the Unagi Don is barbecued fresh water eel over a large portion of steamed rice in a bowl.

For those who prefer nigiri and sashimi, Sushi Ota offers different options, such as Tuna (Maguro), Tuna (Blue Fin), Chopped Toro, Chu Toro, O Toro, Yellowtail (Hamachi), Yellowtail Belly, Kanpachi, Salmon, Salmon Belly, Halibut (Hirame), Red Snapper (Tai), Golden Eye (Kinme).

They also have Mackerel (Saba), Spanish Mackerel (Aji), Shrimp (Ebi), Sweet Shrimp (Amaebi), Giant Clam (Mirugai), Orange Clam (Aoyagi), Scallop (Hotate), Japanese Squid (Yariika), Eel (Unagi), Sea Urchin (Uni), Salmon Egg (Ikura), and Egg (Tamago).

Sushi Ota Omakase

Omakase, which means “I leave it up to you” in Japanese, is an authentic Japanese dining style where the chef prepares dishes based on the freshest and most exceptional ingredients available. This culinary approach is supposed to allow diners to experience unique flavors and textures in each course, making for a truly memorable meal.

Sushi Ota Omakase costs $130 and lasts about 90 minutes, where diners receive an extended chef’s choice of nigiri, sushi, uni, octopus, Wagyu beef, and desserts.

Sushi Ota Reservation Process

Getting a reservation at Sushi Ota can be a hassle. Because of the reputation from Chef Ota, you need to make a reservation way in advance or pick a really late/early time slot.

You can check availability on OpenTable, but if you want to get omakase at the bar, you must make a reservation through the phone number (858) 880-8778.

Sushi Ota Review

Omakase is supposed to be a unique and personalized experience, but that was not the case at Sushi Ota. While I opted for the Omakase experience, I found it to be lackluster and subpar compared to other sushi restaurants I’ve visited.

First of all, diners are seated at a tiny corner of the sushi bar while the rest of the bar is used to fulfill delivery orders. This made for an underwhelming experience as I found myself staring at unappealing slices of fish in plastic wraps instead of seeing how the chefs expertly create my plates.

While the ingredients were fresh, the flavors were not particularly exceptional or memorable. In my opinion, Sushi Ota’s omakase fell short of my expectations and failed to deliver a truly exceptional dining experience.

The fact that the chef was focusing more on fulfilling the delivery orders than catering to the guests who were dining in-house is definitely not what I expect for paying the hefty price tag of $130 (not including taxes, fees, and beverages).

Chef Ota is no longer at Sushi Ota

Born in Kumamato, Japan, Chef Ota honed his craft working in sushi restaurants in Kobe, Tokyo, and Osaka before moving to San Diego in 1982 and opening Sushi Ota in 1990.

Since then, Sushi Ota has become one of San Diego’s most beloved sushi restaurants. Chef Ota’s reputation draws diners from all over the country, and his omakase service is a popular choice.

However, Chef Ota is no longer at Sushi Ota. There is a new owner and new chief chef at Sushi Ota, which may explain why it no longer lives up to its reputation.

The Wrap-Up: Sushi Ota Review

As a food enthusiast, I have high expectations when it comes to dining out, and while the quality of food at Sushi Ota was decent, I didn’t feel that it lived up to the hype.

Overall, it’s an okay restaurant for those who want Japanese staple food or a casual lunch spot. However, if you’re looking for an exceptional omakase experience, there are likely better sushi places to visit in San Diego.

Even though you may be able to spot leopard sharks year-round, the chance is highest during their mating season between the months of June and October when thousands of them migrate to the shores.

Leopard sharks are beautiful and friendly. Even though they are carnivores, they typically feed on small bony fish and don’t attack humans, so don’t be afraid!

4. Turtle Town

Turtle Town is a hidden gem in the center of La Jolla’s marine park, which can be accessed through La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores. The area is filled with red and green kelp beds.

Although Turtle Town is quite challenging to access for average snorkelers, it is a great spot to see sea turtles. You will have the best chance of spotting sea turtles here in late summer and early fall.

5. Boomer Beach

• Zinque: This is a hip restaurant with French-inspired dishes and small plates. Zinque ‘s happy hour is from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. Wines and cocktails are on the pricier side, but you can get any flatbread for $9!
• Iron Fish & Oyster: Happy hour is from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM with $1 oyster and other small bites! What a great deal!

Harumama is an Asian restaurant serving ramen, sushi, noodles and buns. Although I’m not a huge fan of their ramens, their animal character bao buns are delicious!

8. Attend Events in Little Italy San Diego

There are many events in Little Italy San Diego throughout the year, but especially during the warm summer months. Make sure to check out these events when you’re in the area:

• Little Italy Summer Film Festival: Every saturday from July 2nd to September 3rd, there will be movie screenings at the Amici Park Amphitheater (W. Date & State Streets). These classic Italian films, complete with English subtitles, will make you feel like you’re right there in Italy. Doors open at 7:30 PM and the movies start at 8:00 PM, so it might get chilly. Make sure to bring some blankets to keep warm and some snacks to enjoy! Admittance fee is $10 donation.
• Padres Italian Heritage Night is an event in July that celebrates the rich Italian heritage of the city. The Little Italy Association partner with San Diego Padres for a theme game to enhance fan experience. The event is held at Petco Park. When you purchase the tickets in advance, you will receive a limited edition commemorative San Diego Padres Italian Heritage Night hat.
• Trick or Treat on India Street: Trick-or-Treat on India Street is a Halloween tradition in Little Italy San Diego from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday before Halloween (October 28th, 2022). Little witches and monsters in their costumes will be able to stop at participating Little Italy businesses along India Street for Halloween treats and candies. • The Little Italy Tree Lighting & Christmas Village is a holiday tradition that dates back to the early days of the neighborhood. Every year, starting from the first weekend of December, the neighborhood is decorated with Christmas lights. There will be a Christmas tree at Piazza Basilone another at Piazza della Famiglia. During the tree lighting ceremony (December 3rd in 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM), there will be seasonal vendors, holiday treats, live music and entertainment!

In Italy, the square is the main meeting place in the city. It’s no wonder, then, that the Italian inhabitants of San Diego wanted to bring the squares to their neighborhood. The way that San Diego is structured makes it impossible to build large squares, but there are a few small ones that became the pleasant outdoor meeting places for locals and tourists. Of all the squares here, Piazza Della Famiglia is the beating heart of Little Italy San Diego, and it’s hard to miss as you walk by the fountain on West Date St.

10. Get gelato from Little Italy Food Hall

Right by the fountain at Piazza Della Famiglia, there is the Little Italy Food Hall, where you can find plenty of food offerings, and of course, gelato! You can ask for samples before ordering, though I highly recommend the the Straciatella and Mocha flavors! Grab your gelato and sit by the fountain, you’ll have an ideal vantage point from which to watch passersby and soak up some local culture.

11. Stopping by Piazza Basilone

Piazza Basilone is one of the most iconic features of Little Italy San Diego. The large, tiled plaza is reminiscent of those found in Rome, and the central fountain with its flowing water globe is a sight to behold. The square is located at the intersection of India Street and West Fir Street, making it a highly visible and easily accessible landmark.

While the piazza itself is small, it packs a punch in terms of character and charm. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood or enjoying a cappuccino at one of the nearby cafes, a stop at Piazza Basilone is a must.

The Amici House is a historic home located in Little Italy at 250 W Date St. The house, originally inhabited by the Giacalone family, was located between India St and Columbia St, but was moved in 2014 for the creation of Piazza della Famiglia.

1. Hot Creek Geological Site

Hot Creek Geological Site is located in the Long Valley Caldera, only 9 miles from Mammoth Lakes. The breathtaking site consists of several natural hot springs. Although not available for swimming and bathing due to the rapid change in water temperatures, Hot Creek Geological Site is worth a visit for the incredible experience to observe geology in action, such as boiling waters emerging from the creek bed or fumaroles and geysers erupting. Because the geothermal waters are constantly changing course underground, there are new hot springs formed while others are disappearing. If you can, try to plan for sunset or sunrise at Brees Lookout for a stunning view of the Hot Creek Geological Site.

How to get to Hot Creek Geological Site: Take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn right on to the US-395 ramp to Bishop. Travel 3.1 miles and turn left onto Hot Creek Hatchery Rd. Stay on Hot Creek Hatchery Road for 3.3 miles then turn left onto Hot Creek Overlook Rd. The parking lot is on the left and you can take the Hot Creek Interpretative Trail to get to the site.

2. The Rock Tub Hot Springs (Whitmore Hot Springs)

Although Google shows separate locations for Rock Tub Hot Springs and Whitmore Hot Springs, they are actually the same hot springs with different names. The Rock Tub Hot Springs is about 10 miles from Mammoth Lakes, in the same general direction as Hot Creek Geological Site. Thanks to its easily accessible location with only 0.1 miles of dirt road and no hiking, Hot Tub Hot Springs is one of the most popular hot springs in the Mammoth Lakes area for both locals and tourists.

The hot springs site consists of a small tub that can fit up to 4 people comfortably. There is a small pipe taking up the water from another source, which can explain why the temperature may be cooler than other hot springs. The bottom of the tub is mossy and slippery, so be careful when you enter and exit the tub.

How to get to Rock Tub Hot Springs/Whitmore Hot Springs: Take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn right on to the US-395 ramp to Bishop. Turn left onto Benton Crossing Road after 5.4 miles and turn left again onto Whitmore Tubs Road. Continue for 1 mile and turn right onto an unmarked dirt road. Park your car in the small parking lot and walk around the corner and you will see the hot springs. If you are using Google Maps to navigate, make sure you input Rock Tub Hot Springs instead of Whitmore Hot Springs.

3. Wild Willy’s Hot Springs (Crowley Hot Springs)

Wild Willy’s Hot Springs, also known as Crowley Hot Springs, is one of the most popular spots for hot springs lovers in Mammoth Lakes. That is probably thanks to the fact that it has more than one pool with breathtaking views of the mountains. The waters are entirely heated by natural hot springs that come up through the vents directly underneath them.

How to get to Wild Willy’s Hot Springs: From Mammoth Lakes, take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn right on to the US-395 ramp to Bishop. Turn left onto Benton Crossing Road off of Highway 395 (the turn is recognizable by a green church at the corner). Drive for about 3 miles and turn right onto a dirt road as you cross over a cattle guard. Continue driving about 1.5-miles until you reach a parking lot, from which you will see the wooden boardwalk leading off to the site.

4. Crab Cooker Hot Springs

Crab Cooker Hot Springs used to be one of the best hot springs in Mammoth Lakes with spectacular views of the lash field with a dramatic mountain backdrop. In order to access Crab Cooker Hot Springs, make sure you have a high clearance vehicle as the road is bumpy and hard to drive. You can also access Crab Cooker by walking 0.5 miles from the Shepherd Hot Springs.

Cost: Free. Unfortunately, the pipe leading up to the pool was broken in 2021 and the water dried up. It is unknown when the hot springs will reopen.

5. Shepherd Hot Springs

Shepherd Hot Springs can be a little quieter than the other hot springs in Mammoth Lakes Area. There are cement rocks added to raise the edge of the pool and there is even a raised bench inside to sit on. Since it is quieter, you will most likely have more time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacular view of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

How to get to Shepherd Hot Springs: Take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn right on to the US-395 ramp to Bishop. Turn left onto Benton Crossing Road after 5.4 miles and turn left again onto Whitmore Tubs Road. Turn right on the sixth dirt road (about 0.5 miles from turning to Whitmore Tubs Road), and you will find the parking lot slightly to the right.

6. Travertine Hot Springs

A little further from Mammoth Lakes, Travertine Hot Springs contains a group of mineral springs in Bridgeport. With easy access by car only about an hour from Mammoth Lakes, Travertine Hot Springs has been an extremely popular spot for hot springs lovers, tourists and locals alike. Besides the main pool, there are multiple small hot tub size hot springs available as you hike around the area. There is also an ADA-accessible cement tub located next to the parking lot. You can couple your visit to Travertine Hot Springs with a stop at Bodie Ghost Town.

How to get to Travertine Hot Springs: Take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn left onto the US-395 ramp to Lee Vining. Continue for 50 miles and turn right onto Jack Sawyer Road. Follow the signs for Travertine Hot Springs, you should find Travertine’s parking lot on the right after about one mile.

7. Buckeye Hot Springs

Buckeye Hot Springs is a little further from the town of Mammoth Lakes compared to Travertine, but it is also a popular hot spring near the town of Bridgeport. You will find three pools of Buckeye hot springs nestled between the banks of Buckeye Creek. Temperatures can vary from 100F to 140F depending on how close you are to the source. The multiple pools by the creek can fit around 30 people. While not as popular as Travertine Hot Springs, it still gathers a lot of attention from tourists and locals. In order to access the pool, you will have to hike down a steep trail so shoes are highly recommended.

How to get to Buckeye Hot Springs: Take the State Route 203 (Main St) and turn left onto the US-395 ramp to Lee Vining. Continue for 51 miles and turn left onto Twin Lakes Road for 7 miles before turning right on Buckeye Rd. Stay on Buckeye Road and you will get to Buckeye Hot Springs.

8. Hilltop Hot Springs (Pulkey’s Pool)

Hilltop Hot Springs, also known as Pulkey’s Pool or Pulky’s Pool, offers a panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada snow-capped mountain tops. The stone tub is man-made and water flows in through a system of pipes from the creek nearby. There is a valve that allows you to control the amount of water flowing in, hence, the warmth of the water. There is a wooden plank trail that will take you from the parking lot to the pool.

Cost: Free. Unfortunately, Hilltop Hot Springs (Pulkey’s Pool) is also closed in 2021.

9. Keough’s Hot Springs

Keough’s Hot Springs was established in 1919. On its birthday, Keough’s Hot Springs picks one lucky guest to enjoy the day pass for free.

There are two hot springs pools on site. The larger one is cooler than the smaller one and is the largest natural hot springs pool in the Eastern Sierra. There are lounge chairs for sunbathing, snack bars, and a picnic area. There are also massage services available.

If you want to stay the night, camping is not the only option. You can cozy up in a furnished tent cabin on site. Please note that Keough’s Hot Springs is closed on Tuesday.

Cost: $12 per adult, $7 per child (from 3 to 12 years old), $4 per child under 2 years old. In addition to the entrance pass, you can pay $8 for a water aerobics session.

10. Benton Hot Springs

Benton Hot Springs is located in the historic town of Benton, forty miles northeast of Mammoth Lakes. Having a glory pass as a thriving silver mining town between 1865 and 1890, Benton still preserved some of the historic sites and buildings from the mining era.

The Inn at Benton Hot Springs provides campsites, rooms, and houses with semi-private or private hot tubs that are fed by the natural hot springs. In total, there are 12 campsites, a historic miners cabin, seven rooms, and four houses with private hot tubs. The campsite starts at 70$/night, and the room with semi-private hot tubs starts at $149.

Cost: Semi-private and private hot tubs fed by natural hot springs are included in the price of the rooms and the campsites.

11. Sierra Hot Springs in Sierraville

Sierra Hot Springs is a rustic hot springs resort in Sierraville, about 4 hours from Mammoth Lakes. Sierra Hot Springs used to accommodate day passes and drop-ins, but these options have been discontinued since the first reopening phase on May 21, 2021.

The hot springs are currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Camping is available through advance reservation but no hooks up are available. Furnished rooms are available for two-night stays from or Wednesday to Friday or three-night stays from Friday to Monday.

Cost: Rooms and camping passes include access to the pools from 2 PM on the day of your arrival till; 2 PM on the day of your departure. Day passes are currently unavailable during the first phase of opening.
